About Us

The BioPPuL group has its origins at UNESP in Araraquara, Brazil, where our founder and group leader, Professor Jorge Pereira, mentored numerous students and laid the foundation for innovative bioprocessing research. Later, Professor Jorge returned to Portugal to join the University of Coimbra, establishing BioPPuL@UC. Since then, our group has grown, welcoming master’s and PhD students, as well as mobility students, fostering an international and collaborative environment.

At BioPPuL, we are committed to advancing biobased solutions across various industries, with a primary focus on the food, cosmetics, and textile sectors. Our mission is to provide a holistic approach to bioprocessing, addressing global challenges with sustainable, circular solutions.

Our research spans the entire biorefinery process:

• Valorizing Agricultural Residues: Transforming agricultural waste into valuable feedstocks for bioproduct production.

• Optimizing Fermentation Processes: Enhancing the efficiency and yield of added-value biomolecules.

• Extraction and Purification Development: Innovating processes for circular and sustainable applications.
